About Dh33 million were collected on the second day of a three-day nation-wide telethon for raising funds for victims of famine and drought in the Horn of Africa, which got underway in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday. The 90-minute live show telecast on Abu Dhabi TV is expected to receive more donations from good-doers in its last day on Friday.

The telethon was launched based on the instructions of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces , under the theme 'Quenching their thirst'.

Over 165 million people in the Horn of Africa region are affected by the drought which hit Somalia, Djibouti and Ethiopia. During the past few weeks, around 29,000 children died of hunger. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
