Telethon to raise money for Lebanon brings in Dh41m

The majority of the funds pledged during the recent telethon Towards Healing Lebanon's Wounds has been collected, according to the Mohammad Bin Rashid Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation, one of the event's main organisers.

Of the Dh54 million raised on July 28, more than Dh41 million has now been collected, and is being dispensed towards the wide range of humanitarian efforts being carried out by the foundation, as well as the UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA). The funds were raised in 10 hours during a telethon simultaneously aired on Dubai Media Incorporated channels.

According to the foundation, most people have deposited the amount that they pledged on the night directly with the Dubai Islamic Bank or have been made cheques out to the Mohammad Bin Rashid Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation.

During the telethon, Arab dignitaries and celebrities joined forces to express solidarity and raise awareness of the catastrophe that had befallen Lebanon. So far, more than 1,000 tonnes of humanitarian items, including food, clothes and ambulances, have been sent from the UAE to Lebanon, according to local relief organisations.

With aircraft transporting humanitarian items now able to reach Beirut, more aid is flowing into Lebanon, but problems persist in reaching areas most in need. On Monday a plane coordinated by the foundation arrived in Beirut, carrying trucks and infant food, with another planeload due to arrive on Wednesday. (Gulf News)
