It was a historic day in the emirate with tens of thousands of people from across the region attending the groundbreaking celebrations organised to mark the 60th Accession Day of His Highness Sheikh Saqr Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah.

Sheikh Saqr arrived at the venue of the celebrations to greet the huge crowds of people that had assembled all to demonstrate their love for their respected leader. The celebrations were led by Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, and attended by other sheikhs and dignitaries.

The celebrations started with a massive procession led by 60 horse riders carrying UAE flags and pictures of Sheikh Saqr. It was followed by a group of Emiratis who carried falcons with them.

Thousands of pupils from public and private schools also took part in the procession which wound its way from Al Qawasim Corniche to the main venue of the celebration.

The procession was interrupted when Sheikh Saqr made a sudden appearance. The crowd surrounded his vehicle and praised him by saying "Long Live... Your Highness". The expatriate communities, including Yemenis, Egyptians, Jordanians, Sudanese, Somalis and Syrians, also took place in the colourful parade to show their appreciation for Sheikh Saqr.

After the procession came to an end, the people were treated to an amazing display of marine acrobatics off the corniche. A large number of various types of boats took part in the maritine exercise. As the boats were mesmerising the viewers with their antics, there was an air display carried out by a number of helicopters and other types of aircraft.

Aircraft from the air wing of the emirate's police and others from Ras Al Khaimah-based aviation clubs lit up the sky with UAE flags and pictures of Sheikh Saqr. Many folklore associations played special songs composed for the occasion.

An opera titled "60 Golden Years for the Falcon of the Arabs" was also staged. It depicted the life of Sheikh Saqr from his birthday and highlighted his key accomplishments.

An exhibition of rare photographs, including a plaque stating "For my father... with love" made of pearls by Sheikha Ameenah Bint Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi will be the star attraction of the celebrations. It is made of 582 pearls. – Gulf News
