The Ministry of Environment and Water is bracing to launch a three-year nation-wide campaign to control Red Palm Weevil (RPW), the most dangerous and deadly pest of date. Sultan Abdullah Alwan, Acting Executive Director for Agricultural and Animals at the Ministry, said the RPW control programme aims at increasing levels of biological security as part of the country's policy to achieve food security.
'A general strategy has been chalked out under which Integrated Pest Management techniques (IPM) will used in a way that produces greater efficiency in fighting against targeted pests to protect date palm trees,' he said.
Saeed Al Bagham, coordinator of the campaign, said some 30,000 pheromone traps, 360,000 pheromone lures, 10,000 chromone lures and 4,000 lights traps would be deployed in farms, streets and home gardens. He unveiled that suppliers of these products were invited to offer their bids. He indicated that a coordinating meeting would be held with all stakeholders to discuss ways of better implementation of the campaign. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
