Three cheers for UAE forces

A word of praise for the UAE's men in uniform belonging to the Armed Forces' Relief Force contingent who have returned from the flood-ravaged parts of Pakistan having unflinchingly done their duty and brought honour to the country, commented a UAE daily.

"Their humanitarian efforts have been recognised by the host country and also by the leadership in the UAE spearheaded by the President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan who have all placed on record their appreciation for the exemplary manner in which the men conducted themselves and carried out their duties. In fact, their high level of efficiency was acknowledged by other international agencies as the Force battled hardship and offered succour to the affected in some of the worst hit disaster areas", said Khaleej Times in its editorial.

In those terrible days a UAE funded clinic offered medical aid to 3,000 children and a 110-bed hospital was activated to help children in the aftermath.

The UAE has earned a name for itself for always being there when the cry for help is heard. This humanitarian initiative is ongoing and crosses boundaries and other manmade differences. It is purely to help those who are in the throes of a crisis, it added.

Efforts in Mauritania to help the poorer sections of society have crossed the US$1.5 million and have centred on medical aid and procurement of potable water.

The UAE Red Crescent is also well known for its efforts to offer a helping hand and has been in the forefront in Pakistan. In fact, just prior to the return of the Relief Forces the UAE Red crescent Authority and UNICEF entered into an agreement to fast-track a preventive health programme to reduce the risk of tetanus and measles as well as other water borne diseases in Pakistan.

"In keeping with this spirit, it is laudable that Operation Sanid was launched in January this year to create a voluntary and trained group of professionals that could rush to local, regional and international crisis hit areas. The word ‘Sanid' means ‘support' in Arabic and certainly lives up to its name with a team having been on the spot during the worst of the floods. Indeed, the UAE can take great satisfaction that it has its heart in the right place", the paper concluded. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
