1943: Sheikh Maktoum Bin Rashid Al Maktoum is born in the Al Shindagha area of Dubai. He is the eldest son of Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, then ruler of the emirate of Dubai.



1958: Sheikh Maktoum makes his first public speech on the accession of his father.



1960s: Sheikh Maktoum completes his schooling in the UAE and is sent by his father to pursue education at one of Britain's leading universities. Sheikh Maktoum addresses the people of Dubai on behalf of his father, and from that moment onwards, Sheikh Maktoum becomes his father's right-hand man.



1968: Sheikh Maktoum joins his father for talks with other Trucial States on the formation of the UAE federation.



1971: Following the establishment of the UAE federation, Sheikh Maktoum is appointed the first Prime Minister.



1972: Sheikh Maktoum chairs the first meeting of the UAE Cabinet.



1979: Sheikh Maktoum stands down from his Prime Ministerial post and his father takes over.



1981: Sheikh Rashid falls ill and the responsibility falls firmly on his four sons. Sheikh Maktoum oversees the management of day-to-day affairs of Dubai. Throughout the 1980s Sheikh Maktoum took on more duties, paying particular attention to the promotion of law and order and education. He quickly gained a reputation of being a philanthropist through his generous work. He funded many humanitarian projects such as orphanages in developing countries and building of schools both locally and internationally.



1983: Sheikh Maktoum returns to the Cabinet as Deputy Prime Minister.



1990: Sheikh Maktoum officially becomes the Ruler of Dubai. Sheikh Maktoum is also officially elected Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE. During his rule, Sheikh Maktoum focused on nationwide development projects.

The big achievements realised so far necessitate hard work to continue the building and progress process. We also need to protect our accomplishments so far and to push them forward by joining hands, both Rulers and people, just like we were before and like we will always be if God wills.



The younger generation is the future of our country and we pin great hopes on them to join the civilised and developed world all facilities are provided for UAE youth, including education and culture, so they can continue the building process in the future.



The UAE federation has become part of our nation's existence.



Since the federation was announced in 1971, everybody has stressed the UAE is on the threshold of big leaps towards the future. Today, we see that what was achieved for our people due to the firm federal march is greater than the age of the federation according to measures of contribution and the age of our nations.



Achievements over the past 20 years, including a solid infrastructure and a strong economy, stand witness to the deep and fundamental changes in the fate of this nation.



The federation has become an inseparable part of the UAE's existence and is the hope for a bright and prosperous future.



Our country's federal march since the UAE federation was established paves the way for continuing the construction drive and guiding the future generations on the path of brotherly cooperation. (The Gulf News)
