Beirut - A senior UN official has said that a plan to plant a tree in place of every landmine in Southern Lebanon has made good progress. The plan, supported by the United Arab Emirates and a number of international agencies, is part of Operation Emirates Solidarity to demine Southern Lebanon following Israeli withdrawal from the region over two and half years ago. Staffan de Mestura, the Personal Representative of the UN Secretary General for Southern Lebanon, said the demining project has now taken a developmental approach with the implementation of a tree-for-a landmine plan.

Some 6 thousand trees have already been planted out of a targeted total of 150 thousand trees. Two months ago, UAE military experts together with two international firms cleared Southern Lebanon from landmines left behind by Israeli troops. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
