A group of Lebanese residents of Dubai have launched a campaign to raise one trillion Lebanese pounds (Dh2.54 billion) to help rebuild Lebanon following the widespread destruction caused by Israel's war on the country.

The Trillion for Lebanon campaign (TFL), which is backed by the Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation, plans to raise the amount through numerous fund-raising projects over an extended period.

The head of the campaign, who preferred not to be named, said the UAE-based campaign would initially last for three to five years with plans to expand into the Gulf Arab region, the rest of the Arab world and eventually internationally.

He said that the Sheikh Mohammad Foundation had the final say in the distribution of the funds raised. The campaign, he added, has more than 200 volunteers from various nationalities who meet once a week.

The campaign's latest project is an ambitious plan to raise $1 million (Dh3.67 million) in one month through the sale of advertising space on a massive billboard that has been erected between the second and third interchanges on Sheikh Zayed Road.

The 1,500 metre square billboard has been divided into 1,000 squares of 1.42 metres square for advertisers to buy at a price of $1,000 (Dh3,670) each, which organisers are hoping to fill completely in order to raise the target amount. According to the head, 30 per cent of the advertising space has already been sold. (Gulf News)
