Tunis - President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali of Tunisia received here yesterday Speaker of the Federal National Council (FNC) H.E. Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair and discussed with him ways to strengthen Tunisian-UAE ties.

Al Ghurair said in a press conference held in Tunis prior to his departure to Morocco that his talks with the Tunisian President covered topics relating to bilateral cooperation. He added that the two countries share identical views in different issues.

Asked whether the meeting touched on the issue of UAE's islands, occupied by Iran, Al Ghurair said President Ben Ali reiterated Tunisia's support to all stands taken by the UAE.

He said that he discussed the islands issue with the Tunisian Foreign Minister Abdul Wahab Abdullah, who affirmed Tunisia's stand by the UAE. He also welcomed mediation efforts on the issue.

"The UAE welcomes any mediation efforts by the brothers in this issue. We call on Iran to start direct negotiations with the UAE to resolve the issue or to refer it to the International Court of Justice. The UAE will accept any decision that will be made."

Al Ghurair pointed out that the islands were considered an important issue in the UAE and that the whole country is working on it as a "one team." On the commercial cooperation, Al Ghurair said that the volume of trade between the UAE and Tunisia soared to 3 billion USD and that UAE's recent investments in Tunisia were estimated to reach 20 billion USD. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
