Ankara - Turkish President, Abdullah Ghul, received here Friday evening Economy Minister, Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi, who headed the UAE delegation to the just ended UAE-Turkey joint committee meeting in Turkey. The UAE minister conveyed to the Turkish president greetings from President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. They discussed relations of friendship between the two countries, particularly economic ties. They also discussed the positive results achieved at the end of the joint committee meeting.

The Turkish President expressed profound happiness for the development of economic ties between his country and the UAE. He reiterated his country's commitment to exert more efforts to further boost the existing political, economic and cultural ties with the UAE. He said there is the need for the private sectors of both countries to seize the opportunity of the economic reforms in the two countries to boost bilateral ties and joint investment.

Sheikha Lubna said the UAE is highly committed to boosting bilateral ties and economic cooperation with Turkey, adding that there is the need for the two countries to surmount all challenges to boost bilateral cooperation for their mutual interest. She praised the positive results achieved during the joint committee meeting. She said the results will further boost economic prosperity in the two countries and will strengthen bilateral relations between the UAE and Turkey.

The Minister briefed the Turkish President about the latest development in the UAE economy and the government's plans for economic growth, developing the non-oil sector and boosting comprehensive development in various social and economic sectors.

She said the UAE's economy had witnessed in 2007 a gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate of 16.5% to bring the GDP to Dh698 billion, with the non-oil sector accounting for 65% of the total amount, adding that the UAE, which has become a hub for foreign investment attracted in 2006 a total amount of US$19 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI), a figure which represents an increase of 10.8% compared to the FDI recorded in 2005.

She urged Turkish companies and investors to seize the opportunities of the UAE's investor-friendly climate to invest in her country for the mutual benefit of the two countries.

Bilateral relations between the UAE and Turkey have witnessed significant growth in the past years, particularly in the area of economy. Trade exchange between the two countries surged by 400% from 2002 to 2007 to reach a total of US$3.7 billion last year, compared to US$700 million in 2002. The two countries are keenly interested in raising the level of trade exchange between them to reach a target of US$10 billion in the next few years. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
