Two New Zealander cyclists made it to Al Dhafra Festival in Al Gharbia (the Western Region) after one and a half year journey to celebrate the strong bond between man and camel.
Al Dhafra Festival, the most inspiring show of local tradition and heritage, is organised by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH) under the patronage of H.H. General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.
Mohammed Khalaf Al Mazrouei, the Advisor for Culture and Heritage at the Court of the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Chairman of the Festival's Higher Organizing Committee and Director General of ADACH, welcomed Thomas Carl Akash and Julie William, who have been on a bicycle trip since April 2009 and are fans of camels and their races.
Thomas and his wife Julie stressed that they decided to take a long journey on their bicycles away from the daily routine, especially after passing their forties. Their journey started from Las Vegas through to Canada, the Rocky Mountains, Argentina, the Pacific, Chile, and then South Africa, Spain, France, Italy and Slovenia until they reached the UAE via Iran, Turkey and Syria.
Thomas said they went to Dubai and then Amman to look for camel racing, where they heard about Al Dhafra Festival. Hence, they decided to go back to UAE to pay a visit to Al Gharbia in order to enjoy this breathtaking Festival, which was well worth the effort.
The New Zealander couple expressed their happiness with the gracious welcome their received in Al Gharbia in particular and the UAE in general. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
