UAE, Australia sign two extradition and legal assistance treaties

Canberra - The United Arab Emirates and Australia signed Sunday two treaties on extradition of criminals and mutual legal assistance on criminal matters. The two treaties were signed here in Australia by Mohammed bin Nakhira Al Dhahiri UAE Minister of Justice who was on a visit from 23 to 27 July and David Johnston, Minister for Justice and Customs and Senator for Western Australia. The treaties cover extradition cooperation between the two countries for crimes such as people (human) trafficking, money laundering, corruption and terrorism.

The two ministers underscored the new agreements and said they constitute a significant step towards cementing mutual cooperation aimed at fighting international crime. They further stressed that the two treaties would enhance the ability of their two countries to fight trans-border crime. Such agreements make sure criminals will not get away with their crimes once they cross international borders and enable countries to exchange help and data to detect, investigate and follow up on criminal acts, stressed the Australian Minister.

The signing ceremony was attended by UAE Ambassador to Australia Dr Saeed Mohammed Al Shamsi and Australian Attorney-General Philip Ruddock. Meanwhile, the UAE Minister of Justice and members of the accompanying delegation visited Australia's Institute of Judicial Administration, Federal Court, Legal Information Institute and Judicial Commission to acquaint themselves with the electronic judicial system.
