The UAE's Ambassador to the UK, Abdulrahman Ghanem Almutaiwee, was received by the Lieutenant-Governor, General Sir John McColl, and the Bailiff, Sir Michael Birt, after arriving on the Island of Jersey on Wednesday for a two-day visit.

The trip was intended to increase the long-standing business and cultural ties between the UAE and Jersey, especially as both have strong financial services and tourism sectors.

Besides holding talks with the Lieutenant-Governor and the Bailiff, the Ambassador also met with Jersey's Chief Minister, Senator Ian Gorst, and other Ministers to discuss the scope for collaboration in various economic fields.

Among subjects discussed was the possibility that the UAE's Masdar might be able to provide advice on renewable energy, particularly the capture of tidal energy. Jersey currently imports all of its electricity from France.

The possibility of a visit to the UAE by Chief Minister Gorst in 2013 was also discussed.

The Ambassador also met local business leaders, as well as visiting cultural sites of significance to the UAE-Jersey relationship. Among these was the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, which has rescued endangered animals from around the world since 1959 and has long-standing ties with the UAE.

The park was the inspiration for Sharjah's world-class Arabian wildlife reserve and has a strong relationship with the Mohammed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund.

The UAE envoy was presented with a silver medal as a symbol of appreciation and friendship at a dinner hosted by the Island's Bailiff, who serves as Chief Justice, and attended by the Lieutenant-Governor, the Chief Minister and other Ministers. He went on to address a group of 65 business leaders and had discussions with the business community about the UAE and Jersey's common strengths and challenges.

Although this was the first official visit by a UAE representative to Jersey, the partnership has grown considerably over the last ten years. Three UAE banks now have operations on the island and Jersey Finance now has its regional headquarters for the GCC states and India in Abu Dhabi. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
