Bilateral relations and cooperation between the UAE and Korea have developed significantly over the last few years with the UAE now ranking in the 14th position with regard to the volume of trade with the Republic of Korea at an estimated US$7 billion, said Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. Speaking to the Korean News Agency (Yonhap), Sheikh Hamdan said that the main objective of his current visit to the Republic of Korea was to strengthen bilateral relations between the two friendly countries which have developed significantly over the last few years.

"We would also like to get closely acquainted with the Korean officials and the progress achieved in all fields,” he said. Sheikh Hamdan added: " This visit comes within the context of boosting relations with friendly countries, and also in return to the visit of high-level Korean officials to the UAE, the latest of which was the visit of the Korean Defence Minister who delivered a written message to H.H. the President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. We expect our visit to boost bilateral relations between the two countries”.

He noted that the Republic of Korea is considered the second largest Asian trade partner with the UAE after Japan. The number of Korean companies and firms in the UAE reached 44. Asked whether he was satisfied with the current level of economic cooperation between the two countries, Sheikh Hamdan said: " Yes, we feel satisfied with this level, and I have pointed to the statistics of the volume of trade exchange between the two countries. However, we are looking for more cooperation to achieve our two countries' objectives of progress and prosperity”.

On what was required to boost bilateral relations, Sheikh Hamdan said that continuing efforts were being exerted in different fields with special emphasis on economic, scientific and technological cooperation in which Korea has progressed by bounds and leaps. With regard to Korea's preparedness to send troops to Iraq in support of the US-led allied forces, Sheikh Hamdan said: "Korea's decision to send troops to Iraq in support of allied forces is purely Korea's decision, and Korea is not the only country that has decided to take this step. There are other countries which had already sent troops to Iraq. We hope, however, that the Korean troops will contribute with other allied forces to the stability and reconstruction of Iraq”.

Sheikh Hamdan also conveyed the greetings of the UAE leadership to the government and the people of the Republic of Korea. "We convey the sincere regards of the UAE leadership, the government and the people to the friendly Korean people with best wishes of progress and prosperity. We are also happy to be here with our Korean friends whom we greatly respect and appreciate. We also invite Korean businessmen and investors to visit the UAE and acquaint themselves with the progress achieved in all spheres and investment opportunities” (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
