The joint UAE -Moroccan ministerial committee concluded its third meeting here yesterday with a number of protocols and MoUs being signed between various ministries. Convened between 14-16, the meetings were chaired on the UAE side by Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, and from the Moroccan side by Mohammed bin Issa, Minister of Foreign Affairs.

In remarks after conclusion of the meetings, Sheikh Hamdan hailed the protocols, saying that they will reinforce bilateral cooperation. The two sides issued a communiqué in which they re-affirmed their commitment to Arab solidarity and also pledged to enhance the role of the Arab League.

On the Palestinian problem, the two sides renewed their support to the Palestinian people and their leadership as represented by the Palestinian National Authority. While -reaffirming their commitment to the peace process as the only way to achieve a comprehensive settlement to the conflict, the two sides called on the international community to intervene to break the current cycle of violence, put pressure on Israel to stop settlements and withdraw from the occupied territories of 1967.

The two sides also praised the role of the Jerusalem committee which is chaired by King Mohammed VI in preserving the Islamic and Arab identify of the city. On Iraq, the two sides stressed the importance of maintaining unity and territorial integrity of Iraq and also called for institution of a democratically elected government.

On the issue of the occupied UAE Islands of Abu Musa, Greater and Lesser Tunbs, the joint committee called on Iran to positively respond to peaceful initiatives of the UAE, namely to either resolve the issue through direct talks or through international arbitration. The UAE position, said the communiqué, stems from its keenness to maintain the stability and security of the Arabian Gulf. The two sides expressed their condemnation of all forms of terrorism, violence and extremism. They also rejected any attempts to link such acts with Islam. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
