A higher UAE-Syrian joint committee meeting, aimed at bolstering socio-economic relations between the two countries, opened here this evening. The UAE side is being led by Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Information and Culture, while the Syrian side is being headed by Dr. Khalid Ra'ad, Syrian Deputy Premier for Economic Affairs.

The UAE delegation at the meeting include Mohammed Al Ragabani, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Mohammed bin Nakhira Al Dhahiri, Minister of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Awqaf, Saif Saeed bin Saed, Foreign Ministry Under Secretary, Saeed Khalfan Matar Al Rumaithi, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Development Fund, Mohammed Saif Al Mazroui, executive Chairman of the offsets programme Office and other UAE officials.

The Syrian delegation include Dr. Mohammed Al Ammadi, Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade, As'ad Mustapha, Minister of Agriculture and Land Cultivation, Mohammed Ziyada, Minister of Awqaf, Adnan Omran, Minister of Information, Dr. Maha Qunut, Minister of Culture, Mohammed Nabil Al Khatib, Minister of Justice, and other senior Syrian officials. In his opening address Dr. Ra'ad cited the strong and unique relations between the two countries, which, he said, were established by the late Syrian President, Hafez Al Assad and President H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, adding that those relations had been strengthened under the leadership of President Bashaar Al Assad. Dr. Ra'ad praised the UAE and its leadership for the country's Arab nationalism stance with Syria during every difficult situation the latter went through, adding that this had contributed immensely in enhancing the relations of brotherhood between the two countries.

The Syrian Minister emphasised on the positive business climate in Syria, which, he said, had been boosted by the economic reform measures made in recent time to encourage UAE firms and businessmen to raise the level of their investments in various economic and tourism areas. For his part, Sheikh Abdullah expressed his profound appreciation of the level of relations between the UAE and Syria, both at official and popular levels, in addition to the personal relations between Sheikh Zayed and the late President Hafez Al Assad, adding that those relations had seen great improvement under the leadership of President Bashaar Al Assad.

Sheikh Abdullah praised Syria for standing firm on its principle of just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East peace process, based on the international resolutions and on the principle of land for peace. He expressed the hope that results of the joint panel meetings would reflect positively on the two countries' fraternal relations. A number of technical committees have been set up to study and make suggestions and recommendations, which would enhance relations between the two countries in all fields.
