Dr Kim Howells, British Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, arrived in Abu Dhabi yesterday on a two-day visit to the UAE.

Responsible for Middle Eastern affairs at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Dr Howells was received by Lieutenant General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Interior, with whom he discussed international issues and ways of enhancing the extensive bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

Signing a Memorandum of Understanding on law enforcement issues between the UK and UAE with Lieutenant General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Dr Howells said: "Cooperation between the law enforcement agencies of the UK and the UAE has already led to some notable successes. This Memorandum of Understanding is an important agreement, which will further enhance cooperation between our two countries in the fight against terrorism and international crime.

This cooperation is vital to protect the interests of both our countries." In Abu Dhabi, Dr Howells was also received by Sultan bin Nasser Al Kuwaiti, Governor of the UAE Central Bank. They held talks on areas of co-operation in financial matters, and on the Memorandum of Understanding signed recently by the UK and UAE on exchange of information on anti-money laundering and terrorist financing. During his visit to the Gulf, Dr Howells will also pay a visit to Bahrain to offer condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives in the tragic boat accident there.
