Economic relations between the UAE and Iraq are all set for a new phase with joint ventures to be set up and volume of investments be increased, stated a top UAE government official last Wednesday. In a statement to WAM shortly before leaving Baghdad, Minister of State for Finance and Industry Mohammed Khalfan bin Kharbash said he was quite satisfied with the outcome of his talks with Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Hekmat Al Azzawi and Trade Minister Dr. Mohammed Mahdi Saleh. " We have agreed to reactivate free trade and free zone agreements between our two countries and to move forward to another complementary stage where joint ventures should be forged and flow of investments be increased, " Bin Kharbash noted.

Both UAE and Iraq has signed a free zone agreement which became effective last year. Bin Kharbash said he was told by the Iraqi Trade Minister that the UAE was placed fourth among world's countries with trade ties with Baghdad and that exports by UAE firms had made their presence felt in the Iraqi market. He added that the businessmen, who accompanied him during his one-day visit, advised the two Iraqi ministers of the sectors they would wish to invest in, namely industrial, petrochemical and services sectors. " We, in the UAE, would like to have these issues as well as the progress of common economic cooperation being pursued by the joint committee in its next meeting in Abu Dhabi over the coming six months," the Minister of State for Finance and Industry hoped.

Bin Kharbash was all praise with the way the UAE pavilion at the Baghdad International Fair, which took place during Oct. 31- Nov.11, was arranged. Fifty UAE companies, under the arrangement of Dubai Ports, Customs and Free Zone Authority and Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, took part in the Fair. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
