Quebec - "Political Participation is a right for all citizens, male or female, and the government spares no effort in supporting this cause," said Rashid Mohammed Al Shuraiqi, member of UAE Federal National Council (FNC).

Speaking before the first extraordinary debate of the 127th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) being hosted by Canada, the UAE MP said:"The UAE believes that any political or social empowerment requires consistent steps in which all social classes should actively engage." Towards that end, he added, the General Women's Union (GWU) has conducted regular training workshops on political participation for both genders.

"Through their participation in parliament committees and sessions, women have indeed solidified their role in the parliamentary and political life" Al Shuraiqi said.

Canada is hosting the 127th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and related meetings in Quebec City from October 21 to 26, 2012.

The Assembly's overall theme will be the role of parliaments in addressing the challenges of citizenship, identity, and linguistic and cultural diversity in a globalized world.

Discussions and debates will focus on multilateralism and the role of parliamentary diplomacy; peak oil: what prospects for energy security; building peace after conflict; creating opportunities for youth in today's global economy; and, gender-sensitive parliaments. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
