UAE: A symphony of achievements and optimism

The story of the UAE has been a symphony of achievement, accomplishment and optimism. The country has wowed its cynics by ushering into a remarkable development age, one that has taken the world by surprise, Khaleej Times reported yesterday in special supplement on the UAE's 41st national day.

From the most advanced architecture on the planet to one of the world's highest human development indexes, the country's arc of growth has only widened. UAE's political and economic equations with other nations have been widely hailed. Not to speak of the country's willingness to help regional and international initiatives, by sharing its unique experience. With the Spirit of Union at the very core of its nationhood, 41 years after it came into being, the UAE has not only arrived, but carved a niche for itself in the comity of nations.

Classified as a high-income economy with a Gross Domestic Product that ranks amongst the world's top countries, the UAE is seen as a regional powerhouse. Defying the global economic upheaval, the country's economy continues to be strong while registering high growth rates in all key sectors, completely in line with the state's policy of economic diversification. True to its vision, the UAE is the first country in the region to adopt a long-term national initiative to build a green economy. By adopting policies that spur sustainable development, the country has reaffirmed the belief that progressive outlook of its Rulers and dynamism of the people can go hand in hand towards a better future.

It is said that the surest indicator of a great nation is represented not by the achievements of her artists, scientists or buildings but by the general welfare of its people. There is a progressive Emiratisation plan underway, as a result of which ministries and federal entities are adopting measures including annual plans for quota, targeted jobs and training programmes. Besides the government sector, efforts are currently on to increase the number of nationals in private firms. Next year - 2013 - is being celebrated as a year of creating jobs for Emiratis, with Emiratisation being a national priority. The idea to promote Emirati youth, Emirati products and Emirati culture at the archway of the 21st century reflects a genuine pride and self-confidence.

However, the vibrancy of the UAE lies in its diversity. It is a rainbow country with people from 200 different nationalities working together in what is now one of the most cosmopolitan settings in the world.

More than 2.5 million expatriate workers have made the country their second home, resulting in mutual exchanges and unity. Other emirates like Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah accentuate this heterogeneity. And the UAE celebrates its unique diversity because it seeks to connect the bonds of trust across cultures and within the multicultural workplaces, fostering productive interactions and agreements.

Apart from attracting large foreign direct investments and making giant strides in areas of trade and commerce, the UAE has also become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. The country's airports reflect this surge. Dubai is now considered at par with London as the most popular retail city in the world, attracting more than half of all international retail brands. Upwards of 10 million holidaymakers visit the UAE annually. The wealthy, well-educated, and well-travelled vacationers have a high propensity to use modern shopping malls, new-age hotels and world-class transportation, precisely the tourism infrastructure the UAE is famed for.

Under the able guidance of The President, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and other members of the Supreme Council, the UAE is poised to unfurl a new tomorrow. From education to healthcare, construction to information technology, banking to media - the country is racing ahead with confidence and elan. A bold new future is clearly visible on the horizon.

On the 41st National Day, Burj Khalifa, one of modern world's most recognisable architectural splendours, will illuminate to the UAE national flag colours. The flag will proudly flutter on the facade of the world's tallest structure at the uppermost levels high lighting the resourcefulness, dedication and forward looking vision of the country. For the UAE, the winds are a-changing. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
