UAE FM meets Iraqi President

Baghdad - Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates H.H Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan on yesterday met with Iraqi President Jalal Talbani. Present at the meeting was Iraqi Vice President Tariq Al-Hashimi.

After the meeting, Sheikh Abdullah told a press conference that the UAE had seen Iraq as a "key partner in the region. We look forward to see Iraq as a key partner to the GCC as well." Sheikh Abdullah said the UAE will name an ambassador to Iraq within the coming few days.

"There are ongoing talks between the UAE and Iraqi governments about naming an ambassador to Baghdad and re-opening the UAE embassy within the few coming days. The UAE aspires to establish well-founded relations with Iraq," Sheikh Abdullah said.

He praised the role played by the Iraqi government in achieving national reconciliation, imposing security and developing domestic economy.

"We hope that within the coming few weeks, we will see an active UAE embassy in Baghdad that reflects the strong relations between the two countries." Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari offered the Iraqi government's condolence on the sad demise of Sheikh Nasser bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

He described Sheikh Abdullah's visit to Baghdad as a "turning point in Iraq's interaction with the Arab countries." He said that talks with Sheikh Abdullah covered a number of issues related to bilateral relations, adding that the two countries will exchange ambassadors very soon.

He also said that they discussed a proposal to revive the joint committee between the two countries.

Zebari thanked the UAE for providing care to the Iraqi residents.

Sheikh Abdullah expressed his pleasure on visiting Baghdad and reiterated UAE's keenness to continue its close fraternal relations with Iraq.

He told Iraqi Foreign Minister: "Your persistence has led me to Baghdad. The UAE's leadership and people will remain interested in the progress and prosperity of Iraq." – Emirates News Agency, WAM
