UAE Foreign Trade Minister HE Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi, discussed yesterday with Nikoloz Gilauri, the bilateral relations and ways of benefiting from the existing investment opportunities. The two sides explored possibility of Georgia's benefiting from the UAE's trade and distinguished investment environment.
Present in the meeting were Georgian Economic Development Minister Zurab Pololikashvili and Abdullah Ahmed Al Saleh, Director General of the UAE Ministry of Foreign Trade.
The UAE minister called for stepping up efforts to strike a free trade deal between the GCC and Georgia to strengthen cooperation between the two sides. On his part, the Georgian PM stressed that his country is keen to boost the trade and investment exchange with the UAE in all fields, adding that his country is looking forward to signing of investment and financial agreements with the UAE to bolster the joint cooperation.
He referred to the UAE experience of developing the infrastructure and tourism to strengthen abilities of Georgia, indicating that his government is working to enhance the trade cooperation with the GCC through striking a free trade agreement.
The trade exchange between the UAE and Georgia was US$73million in 2008 - mostly the UAE exports to the Georgian market, which surged during the last year.
In another related activity, the UAE minister discussed with Peter Hamilton, Deputy Secretary for programme 4 for the Middle East and Africa at the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign and Trade Affairs, the cooperation opportunities in the fields of trade and economy and ways of further boosting the bilateral cooperation. The two sides also discussed the latest developments in the free trade talks between the GCC and New Zealand and the joint trade agreement reached in the sixth round. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
