Minister of Education HE Humaid Mohammed Obaid Al Qattami chaired yesterday the meeting of the heads of Arab delegations participating in the 35th Session of the General Conference of UNESCO held in the French capital Paris. The minister will address the UNESCO conference tomorrow (Wednesday) to deliver the official speech of the United Arab Emirates.

Al Qattami appraised the Arab delegations, which include ministers and other officials, on the role played by the UAE on the international level with regard to humanitarian issues in general, and the support to strengthen the efforts of UNESCO for safeguarding heritage and the preserving cultural and scientific legacy.

He also briefed them on UAE's support to the efforts of UNESCO in spreading education and achieving the goals of the World Declaration on 'Education for All' adopted in Dakar.

The minister said that the meeting of the Arab delegations gave a rich opportunity for constructive discussions and was characterized by the unity of opinion on the Arab issues of an international nature, particularly the issue of protection of the cultural heritage of the Arab city of Jerusalem.

The General Conference, UNESCO's supreme ruling body, is composed of representatives of the Organization's 193 Member States, usually of ministerial rank. The Conference determines the policies and main lines of work of UNESCO, particularly through the examination and adoption of its biennial Programme and Budget. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
