UAE National Day bash begins with a bang

Fabulous at forty and confident of the future. A celebratory mood gripped the country as it kicked off National Day celebrations with a short but sparkling fireworks display in the Capital on Tuesday. At 8pm, the night sky above the Gulf waters along the Abu Dhabi Corniche dazzled with an array of colour.

But that was only the beginning. A series of rousing events have been lined up across the country, culminating in the grand finale on December 2.

Emirati heritage will be showcased and the modern multicultural nature of the country will be celebrated during this period. The gala will also promote national identity and inspire the people of the UAE to look to the future with hope and pride.

‘To mark this special occasion, the UAE Capital's iconic skyline and landmarks such as Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and Al Jahili Fort in Al Ain will be brought to life through a monumental montage of light and colour,'' according to the National Day Committee.

‘‘This synchronised visual backdrop will be supported with colourful ceremonial branding and decorations erected across the City and Emirate to extend celebrations to all corners,' it said.

It is that time of the year when people of the UAE are encouraged to salute the nation's rich history, culture and achievements.

Some of the highlights of the fiesta will be the Corniche Festival, a perfect spot for friends and families. The carnival will have street performers, traditional food, music acts and sports shows along the action-packed shoreline.

Concerts will promote the diversity of Arab music and entertainment through a series of high-class performances by popular UAE and GCC singers.

The UAE Experience Pavilion on Saadiyat Island will display exclusive artefacts and photographs.

The impressive show will dramatically conclude with an official ceremony attended by over 40,000 spectators on December 2 at Zayed Sports City, on National Day. Yas Marina Circuit will play host to a vibrant parade featuring 5,000 traditional Emirati-themed cars, flags, children with painted faces, marching bands and other performers. Live music will add to the excitement.

Many residents have decided to stay back for the country's birthday bash this year. ‘‘I'm really looking forward to the celebrations! It's 40 years and is bound to be special,' said Steve Thomson, an architect. – Khaleej Times
