The UAE's glorious customs and traditions will be showcased at the National Day Festival slated in the capital on December 1–4. The four-day event is being organised by the Emirates Heritage Club (EHC) under the patronage of Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and chairman of EHC.

On December 1, the celebrations will start at 5am with a horse race — the UAE International Endurance Cup — at Bouthib Endurance Village near Al Khatem. For the main race of 120km, some 75 people have enrolled, while there are 29 people in fray for the 100km race.

The city will see heritage-related activities such as traditional cooking, crafts, textile-making, and folklore shows at the Heritage Village from 9am to 1pm and 5pm to 9pm every day.

On December 1-3, there will be a parade of dhows along the Corniche. The traditional wooden boats will sail between Mina Port and the Breakwater from 5pm to 6pm. Apart from the dhow parade, EHC will also organise a traditional rowing race on December 2 on the Abu Dhabi Corniche at 4 pm.

Also along the Corniche, a folklore show will be staged on December 2-3. It will include traditional singing, dancing and a display of old-style local costumes. The show will be held from 5pm to 9pm.

One of the main events in the festival is the Federation Day Carnival, slated on December 3 on the Corniche from 4 pm onwards. Various aspects of the UAE heritage will be showcased at the parade, like horse, camel and falcon processions, large trucks fitted with Bedouin tents, and display of the desert life-style. In addition, EHC is also organising a photography exhibition to showcase the works of UAE photographers, at the Heritage Village on December 2. (Khaleej Times)
