Geneva: The Permanent Representative of the UAE to UN in Geneva and other International Organisations in Switzerland, Ambassador Obaid Salim Al Za'abi, has condemned the use of chemical weapons, against civilians in Al Ghouta, on the outskirts of Damascus, Syria, and termed it a crime against humanity.

In a speech before the 24th Session of the Human Rights Council , held in United Nations in Geneva between 9-27 September, Al Za'abi welcomed the stances of the UN Human Rights Commissioner, Navi Pillay, on the tragic situation in Syria, and hailed her efforts to mobilise support for the Syrian people to alleviate the suffering of the refugees.

He also hailed the Pillay for her annual report in which she updated the 24th Session of the Human Rights Council on the activities of her Office.

Al Za'abi affirmed the UAE's support for Egypt's bid to host a regional Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Cairo, as well as to the country's effort to achieve a better future based on democracy, justice and human rights.

The UAE diplomat hailed Bahrain's commitment to the implementation of recommendations by the United Nations Human Rights Council.

He also condemned continuous occupation of Palestinian territories as a hurdle to international efforts to adopt dialogue and negotiations as a civilised way to resolve conflicts, and not by violence and imposing the fait accompli policy.

The UAE ambassador also hailed the unwavering stances of the UN Human Rights Commissioner to protect the rights of the Palestinian people to establish a free independent state East Jerusalem as its capital. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
