UAE President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan inaugurated yesterday the 9th edition of the International Defence Exhibition and Conference (IDEX 2009) in the presence of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre.

Attending the grand opening ceremony were also Their Highnesses Supreme Council Members and Rulers of the Emirates, Crown Princes and Deputies of Rulers, a number of sheikhs, ministers, senior officials, heads of diplomatic missions in the UAE, senior army and police officers, businessmen and other economic personalities and heads of delegations attending the IDEX 2009.

Sheikh Khalifa and other Supreme Council members witnessed the spectacular opening ceremony, which started with the national anthem, followed by an operetta dubbed: "The Inspiration" which showcased the building of the United Arab Emirates by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and the UAE's achievements under the reign of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The operetta, the first to be featured in IDEX, also presented live display by a number of military hardware, which won the admiration, and applause of the gathering.

More than 500 UAE national students also exhibited various antics, gymnastic displays and cultural displays, which depict UAE values of generosity and humanitarian works through the UAE Red Crescent Authority.

For the first time in the history of the IDEX live ground, sea and air shows were performed on a mobile exhibition ground in front of the Grand Stand. Various military hardware, F-16 and Mirage 9 of the UAE Air Force, as well as the "Shaheen" war ship of the UAE Navy and other war ships from Italy, Britain, France and India also went on parade.

UAE paratroopers were also active at the show as they entertained the gathering with a breath-taking show, landing with their parachutes carrying the image of the late UAE founder, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

In a statement after touring the exhibition ground, Sheikh Khalifa expressed satisfaction on the rapid development of IDEX in all aspects, including the sharp increase in the size of its area, the number of international companies and countries participating in the biannual show and the types of the high-tech defence systems and modern equipment on show at IDEX, which, he said, has become one of the biggest and the most popular defence exhibitions in the world.

He noted that IDEX' achievements and its great ability to attract the world's major manufacturing companies of defence and security products reflect the solid confidence these companies have in the UAE's organisational capabilities. He said the UAE exhibition industry has now attained superior standard and acquired high reputation at the international level.

More than 900 defence-related manufacturing companies from 50 countries are taking part in the IDEX 2009, which is expected to attract more than 45,000 visitors, including top defence officials from various countries of the world.

IDEX 2009 is being held on an area of about 55,000 square metres of the interior part of the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) in addition to a large area outside the main building of the ADNEC.

The UAE President later held at the Al Mushref Palace a luncheon in honour of Their Highnesses Supreme Council Members, Rulers of the Emirates.

Sheikh Khalifa, who arrived earlier at the ceremony ground, was received on arrival by Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, H.H. General sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
