Beirut - The UAE Programme to Support and Rebuild Lebanon announced yesterday it has finished clearing mines and cluster bombs littering a number of villages in Southern Lebanon.

The Programme's management said it has handed over demined land plots and farms to their landlords in Al Dallafa town in Hasbia district and Arabsaleem and Arnon villages in Nabathiya.

The UAE demining team leader, Lt. Colonel Obeid Thani Al Dhaheri, said a surface area of 6,250 sq. metres was handed over to their owners in Al Dallafa, while 4,405 sq. metres were turned over in Arabsaleem and Arnon.

"Since the launch of the programme last year some 223,834 square metres of fields have been cleared of mines and cluster bombs," he added. The said Programme is an initiative launched earlier last year by President H.H Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
