A delegation from the UAE Red Crescent Society, RCS, currently on a visit to Afghanistan, met here today with Mohammed Na'em, Secretary General of the Afghan Red Crescent Society. The delegation, headed by Sanaa Darwish Al Kutbi, RCS Secretary General, is in Afghanistan to have a first hand knowledge about the situation of the Afghan women and children on the instruction of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Al Nahyan, the President's Wife and Chairwoman of the UAE Women's Federation, who is also the Honorary Chairperson of the RCS.

During the meeting, Na'em thanked the UAE people and its leadership, headed by President H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan for the assistance being extended to the Afghan people in their present situation. He also thanked Sheikha Fatima for her great care for the Afghan people by sending the delegation to have a first hand knowledge of the situation which the Afghan women and children are going through. Al Kutbi, also thanked the Afghan officials for their warm welcome and hospitality, said that the UAE does not regard helping people in distress a favour but a right for those people, adding that UAE assistance is being quickly dispatched to people in distress irrespective of their religious, national and racial inclinations and wherever they are.

She said that the visit seeks to express her country's message of love and goodwill to the Afghan people in their difficult time and in solidarity with the international community's humanitarian efforts to help the Afghan people. Al Kutbi conveyed to the Afghan people the greetings and well wishes of the UAE leadership and people to the people of Afghanistan.

The delegation told the Afghan officials that the UAE was preparing to send more relief assistance to Afghanistan and will embark on various charity and humanitarian projects and programmes in a number of towns in Afghanistan. The two sides reviewed ways to co-operate in relief works and in women and children affairs to ensure the success of the programme.

The delegation disclosed that Sheikha Fatima had made a generous donation, which would be used to complete an orphanage, housing about 500 orphans and an elderly person's home, both of which are being run by the Afghan RCS. The Delegation toured a number of places in the Afghan capital, including a handicraft centre for orphans and widows, the Afghan RCS Hospital and the Ghandi Hospital during which Al Kutbi expressed deep sorrow on the bad situation of the Afghan people, who, she said, were really in dire need of urgent help.
