(WAM) A delegation from the UAE Red Crescent Society, RCS, headed by Mohammed Al Hammadi, Director of the RCS Revenue development section, visited the refugee camp in the Iranian town of Torit Jam, on the border with Afghanistan, which houses a large number of Afghan refugees, who sought refuge there even before the outbreak of the current war. The delegation distributed to the refugees a large quantity of food items, part of the 200 tonnes of various relief items flown to Iran in an air bridge by four planes in implementation of the directives of President H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The delegation later toured the refugee camps to familiarise themselves with the situation there and met with the officers in charge of the camp to see how best they can co-operate in serving the refugees.

According to Morad Askandari, Senior Officer in charge of the camp, the camp was set up 20 years ago and houses more than seven thousand Afghan refugees, mostly from northern Afghanistan, who cannot be involved in any gainful employment, unlike tens of thousands of others who successfully assimilated in the Iranian community and were making a living themselves, he said. He thanked the UAE RCS for coming to the assistance of the refugees. He said the large amount of relief supplies brought in by the RCS would go a long way to alleviate the suffering of the refugees.
