UAE RCS launches relief campaign in the African Horn

The UAE Red Crescent Society (RCS) launched yesterday a relief campaign to help famine victims in the African Horn. Relief supplies will be distributed in drought-and-famine struck countries under instructions form President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, with the follow up of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed AL Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of RCS, said Ahmed Hilal Al Muhairi RCS Deputy Secretary General said in a briefing which was attended by Somali Ambassador to the UAE Hussain Mohammed Blailah and officials from Kenyan Embassy and Djiboutian Embassy in Abu Dhabi.



As part of the campaign which covers Ethiopia, Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea , Uganda and Tanzania, a delegation will leave for Kenya next Sunday to examine the situation in affected areas and distribute food, water, medications and other relief supplies. The delegation will be comprising doctors, volunteers and media men, he added.



In the worst drought in Africa's history, famine has so far claimed about one million lives this year only, he added. RCS will be granting about Dh50 million and will hold an open day to raise donations, he said. Somali Ambassador to the UAE and the other officials expressed gratitude to the UAE people and leadership for the support and help. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
