The UAE Red Crescent Authority (UAE RC) has so far spent an estimated Dh100 million on relief projects in Iraq and Dh306 million for aid to Palestine, according to sources at the authority. According to the latest edition of the Al Hilal quarterly magazine, the UAE RC is implementing an ambitious programme for supporting the Iraqi people and improving the overall humanitarian situation, the ‘Khaleej Times' said in a report. This entailed the provision of basic needs for the people, with priority to the disabled, orphans and the elderly.

The report noted that several delegations from the UAE RC had visited Iraq to assess the situation and supervise the implementation of humanitarian activities. A visiting delegation, headed by Sanaa Darwish Al Kutbi, Secretary-General of the UAE RC, recently signed an agreement with UNICEF for launching a vaccination campaign to eradicate polio. It is expected to benefit about four million Iraqi children.

Another agreement was signed with the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC-RCS) for constructing and furnishing the Ibn Rushd Psychiatry Education Hospital. The report noted that the deterioration of health infrastructure in Iraq was of major concern to the UAE RC, which had undertaken several initiatives to bring the situation back to normal.

Sheikh Zayed Hospital in Baghdad has been fully equipped by the UAE RC. These days it receives about 1,500 patients daily. Other hospitals and medical centres, equipped by the UAE RC so far, include Al Rashidiya Medical Centre in Baghdad, Al Ratba Hospital, Ibn Rushd Psychiatry Hospital, Al Yarmouk Hospital, and others in Al Fallujah, Tikrit, Basra, and Al Mosul. Some orphanages and rehabilitation centres have also been provided with equipment. It noted that in areas of relief supply thousands of tonnes of aid material were airlifted to Iraq in operations that enlisted 23 planes to Baghdad and Al Mosul, and 60 trucks.
