Islamabad - UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA) is working with its Pakistani counterpart to evolve a mechanism to commence the distribution of medicines, essential medical supplies and comprehensive First Aid kits in areas worst-hit by recent floods in Pakistan.

A 70-tonne humanitarian cargo airlifted earlier this week to Pakistan by RCA consisted mainly of medical supplies, in addition to a number of essential food items.

A third cargo plane sent by RCA as part of its humanitarian airbridge arrived at the Peshawar airport today. The cargo containing food and medical supplies will be distributed among the victims by RCA volunteers on ground in cooperation with the Pakistan Red Crescent.

Secretary General of Pakistan Red Crescent Ali Hassan hailed the enthusiasm and effort of RCA in delivering relief and humanitarian assistance to remote areas hit by the floods, which he described as more devastating than Tsunami and Typhoon Katrina that had struck in other parts of the world.

The medical team sent by RCA is on ground providing assistance to the flood victims including women and children. Experienced medics and paramedics are busy with providing vaccinations for women and children living in makeshift camps after fleeing the areas that are still under water.

The medical team working for the field hospital set up by the RCA said that they continue to treat patients for various diseases and the cases which needed specialised surgery have been referred to Al-Ibrahimi Hospital. Al medical aid being given by these two hospitals are part of the charity and relief operations of RCA in Pakistan. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
