UAE Red Crescent projects target needy in 35 nations

The UAE Red Crescent Authority (UAE RCA) has earmarked Dh3,984,000 this year in around 35 countries as part of its seasonal projects so far. The projects comprise Iftar, Eid dress and Zakat Al Fitr, which has benefited around 341,733 individuals, according to a senior official of the authority.



According to Saleh Mohammed Al Mulla, Deputy Secretary-General for Foreign Affairs of the UAE RC, the authority conducts these projects every year to achieve its targets in alleviating the suffering of poor families and helping them during the holy month of Ramadan and on the happy occasion of Eid. He noted that such projects were expanding significantly with 10 new countries being added this year. Al Mulla clarified that the cost of the project amounted to Dh2,684,000 and benefited 268,400 individuals.



The Eid dress project amounted to Dh500,000 and benefited 20,000 individuals, while Dh800,000 was earmarked for Zakat Al Fitr, which helped 53,333 individuals. He pointed out that all these projects were implemented either by the RC's external offices in the concerned countries, or through the UAE embassies in the countries that had no RC offices. Official representatives also cooperated with the UAE RC in implementing some of the projects, he said.



An amount of Dh2,750,000 was spent in Palestine to benefit 161,467 people, while Dh145,000 was spent in Afghanistan to help 12,600 people. The authority spent Dh57,500 in Jordan to help 4,367 people and Dh40,000 in Bahrain to benefit 2,800 people. Nearly Dh120,000 was spent in Bosnia to help 9,167 helpless people, while in Sudan the authority spent Dh40,000 to benefit 3,233 individuals.



Famine-torn Somalia was given Dh140,000 to help 10,867 malnourished people and in Iraq Dh110,000 was used to help 8,667 beneficiaries. In the Philippines, Dh20,000 was spent on 1,533 people. In India Dh45,000 was spent on 3,867 people, while in Yemen the authority spent Dh135,000 on 10,000 people.



In Ethiopia, the RC spent Dh3,287 for its projects, while in Albania Dh145,000 helped 11,333 people. In America, the RC spent Dh184,000 on 18,4000 people, while in Indonesia Dh145,000 was used to help 11,333 people. In Pakistan, the RC spent Dh20,000 to help 1,533 needy persons, while in Sri Lanka, Dh15,000 was used to alleviate the suffering of 1,200 people.



Similarly, the RC spent Dh115,000 in Kazakhstan to serve 9,000 people, while in Vietnam it dispensed aid to 1,200 people with Dh15,000. In Central Asia the authority expended aid of Dh25,000 on 2,200 people, while in Cambodia, Dh15,000 was spent on 1,200 people. In Thailand Dh85,000 was spent on 6,600 beneficiaries, while in Tunisia, Dh20,000 aided 1,533 people. In Lebanon, the UAE RC aided 13,833 people with Dh180,000, and in Egypt the RC's intervention with Dh45,000 helped aid 3,567 hapless people.



In Mauritania, the UAE RC's largesse of Dh37,000 helped 2,867 beneficiaries, and in Benin, Dh20,000 was spent on 1,533 people. In Chad, Dh60,000 was used to help 4,733 people in need, and in Togo Dh10,000 helped brighten the lives of 700 people. In Gambia Dh8000 was used to help 800 individuals, while in Ghana Dh55,000 helped 4,300 people. Eritrea received Dh25,000 worth of contributions, which were received by 2,033 people. The UAE RC also spent Dh102,000 in the other African countries, with 7,880 beneficiaries.



Al Mulla praised the support rendered by the donors and philanthropists to the authority's Ramadan Charity Projects and their sustained response to different humanitarian projects conducted by the RC from time to time. He added that owing to its large support group of volunteers and staff working in the external offices and those who cooperated in executing these projects, the UAE RC was able to reach needy people everywhere, without discrimination and deliver its assistance to populations most in need.
