UAE Representative: Protection of children is responsibility of every state

Geneva: The United Arab Emirates' Permanent Representative to the UN Headquarters in Geneva Obaid Salem Al Zaabi delivered on Thursday a speech before a session of the UN Human Rights Council, held as part of the interactive dialogue on the Annual report of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children.

He said that every state should shoulder its responsibility in protecting children's rights.

Al Zaabi reaffirmed UAE's commitment for protection of children and referred to the recently developed child rights draft law which provides stringent penalties for Putting a child in danger of psychological, emotional, physical or ethical harm, as well as other forms of negligence or carelessness.

According to the draft law, any individual using a child for photographing, recording or distributing pornographic materials will be jailed for a period of not less than 10 years.

Al Zaabi expressed concern over the report's reference to the trafficking and sexual exploitation and engaging them in armed conflicts.

"What concerns us more is the fact that a great deal of violence against children comes from parents and care providers and that only few acts of violence are reported," he added. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
