Berlin - Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum met yesterday on the second day of his official visit to Germany, German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The two leaders held talks on bilateral relations and means of boosting them towards setting up genuine partnership in all fields. They also conferred on finding solutions to the issues that spark conflicts and raise tensions in many regions, such as Middle East, Afghanistan and other volatile regions in the world. After the talks, both Sheikh Mohammed and Merkel held a press conference attended by the local and world media.

Merkel said that "Germany looks forward to establishing true partnership with the UAE on governmental and private levels", admitting that the relations are there but not at the level of strategic partnership.

She added that there is cooperation in the fields of infrastructure, logistics, particularly in the airport and road construction sector, adding that there are wider opportunities of joint cooperation in the fields of health, education, energy, transport and others.

"There is a cooperation between Germany and the UAE particularly and European Union (EU) and GCC countries in general", she said, hoping that agreements will be struck in this respect between EU and GCC to set joint chamber of commerce.

Merkel noted that the Middle East crisis would be settled through establishing the Palestinian and Israeli states, pledging support for the Palestinian National Authority and training of the Palestinian police in Germany.

She added that Germany and the EU are determined to help Lebanon overcome its standoff.

Merkel referred to the role of Germany in Afghanistan as an extension to the roles of European Union and NATO to restore peace and stability in that country, disclosing that "the two countries are set to hold talks to achieve this goal".

On his part, Sheikh Mohammed expressed his pleasure on visiting Germany and holding consultations with Merkel on political, economic affairs and others between the two countries.

"This visit will effectively promote partnership between the two countries and will open up new cooperation opportunities, particularly in the fields of higher education, renewal energy, technology and others", said Sheikh Mohammed.

He added that he stressed the attitude of UAE towards settling of the Palestinian cause and creation of the Palestinian and Israeli states and the need to help Lebanon and Iraq to restore peace.

"Iran is a neighbour country and we refuse use of power against any neighbouring or a sister country. All the countries should exercise greater efforts to find a solution with Iran in this respect", Sheikh Mohammed noted.

About Afghanistan, he said that country is still suffering from demolition of its infrastructure and many foreign troops, notably NATO exist in its territory, adding that "Afghanistan requires serious and active efforts to restore peace and stability, as well as development". – Emirates News Agency, WAM
