UAE aid projects are soon to be set up to help rebuild Lebanon following the extensive destruction caused by Israel's war on the country.

Ebrahim Mohammad Bu Melha, vice-chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Humanitarian and Charitable Foundation, said a lot still needs to be done to help reconstruct Lebanon and thus governmental bodies and individual establishments in the UAE have shown interest in contributing to the reconstruction.

"To see the destruction in reality is very different from watching it on TV or reading about it in a newspaper. A lot is destroyed and there is a lot to be done to help Lebanon recover," said Bu Melha. The foundation is planning to undertake several aid projects mainly involving the health, educational and industrial sectors.

The foundation's main target is to contribute to projects that have a long-term effect and are directly linked to the needs of the people.

According to the foundation's statistics, some Dh11.9 million has been spent in the first phase of assistance where emphasis was on providing food, shelter and medicine to the displaced in Lebanon and refugees in Syria. The foundation has provided medicine consignments worth more than Dh2 million.

More than Dh45 million out of the Dh54 million pledged during the telethon 'Towards Healing Lebanon's Wounds' on July 28 has been collected, according to the Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Humanitarian and Charitable Foundation. The remaining funds that are to be collected are mainly pledges from abroad. (Gulf News)
