An Indonesian paper said that the UAE was among the first providers of humanitarian assistance to the tsunami- victims in Sumatra and Aceh islands. The daily Republika reported that the UAE had offered US$31.2 million for reconstruction efforts in Aceh and Northern Sumatra regions.

According to the paper, the UAE Embassy here had dispatched 46 trucks loaded with different relief supplies. Besides these assistance, the paper added, the UAE had decided to maintain 25 maternity and childcare clinics, and build 500 houses, 5 orphanages and 5 settlements. Twenty seven mosques will also be maintained.

'When the tsunami hit these regions on 26 December 2004, the UAE acted swiftly on the day after, rushing humanitarian aid,' it noted. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
