UAE and France for regional and international stability

UAE and France will be working towards achieving permanent and durable peace, security and stability in the region and all over the world, stressed UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and his French counterpart Philippe Douste-Blazy.

In a joint press conference in Abu Dhabi city, the two ministers stressed the need for protecting and boosting peace in the Gulf and called Iran to positively answer concerns of the international community and Gulf countries and give solid assurances about its much debated nuclear programme.

"UAE and France share the same view on Iran's nuclear issue... (which) has been an integral part of our discussions. We are relying on the meeting between (EU high representative for a common foreign and security policy) Javier Solana and (Iran's top nuclear negotiator) Ali Larijani in Vienna", said Douste-Blazy.

"We (both) support this dialogue and the approach of direct communication with our friends in Iran. We call on our Iranian counterparts to recognize the real preoccupations and anxiety of the Gulf countries ... We believe the Iranians would go on the positive track", remarked the French top diplomat.

"They have to understand that sanctions would decrease the strength of the political regime in Iran and would increase its isolation. It is the worst thing ever to happen", he added.

"We need more assurances that (Iran's nuclear programme) is peaceful and we need transparency because we are afraid anything would go wrong", said Sheikh Abdullah.

Asked about a probable Israeli strike against Iran, Sheikh Abdullah said "Last Thursday, we met with the Iranian Ambassador (to the UAE) and we keep ongoing communications with Iranian officials. We have discussed all the sides of our relations... I call for more optimism." Commenting on the situation in Lebanon, Douste-Blazy and Sheikh Abdullah stressed the need for lifting the Israeli sea and air blockade and for respect for all international Resolutions.

Douste-Blazy called for "a permanent political ceasefire and the restoration of Lebanon's sovereignty" adding that "Hezbollah remains a Lebanese domestic issue." Sheikh Abdullah voiced UAE's support and commitment to all international resolutions and to reconstruction and reactivation of the Lebanese authorities.

He renewed their support for the improvement of the humanitarian situation in Darfur and voiced resentment over the "ongoing tragedy" adding it is not acceptable.

He called on the Sudanese government to put aside differences with UN Security Council and neighbouring countries and "focus on dealing with the Security Council's Resolution and achieve security and safety for people in Darfur".

The two ministers stressed the need for reactivating the Middle East peace process and called all parties of the Arab- Israeli conflict to comply with all relevant international resolutions. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
