UAE and France push for Mideast peace

President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan held talks with French President Nicolas Sarkozy at the Elysee Palace yesterday.

The leaders focused on ways to enhancing and developing the strong relations between the two countries on all levels.

Sheikh Khalifa stressed on the importance of holding an international peace conference on the Middle East crisis, with the support of US President George W. Bush, to make it a success.

The President stressed that a comprehensive and just solution will enhance stability in the area and find a lasting solution to the Palestinian people's dilemma and the Israeli occupation of Arab land.

Sarkozy welcomed Sheikh Khalifa and his delegation and expressed happiness on his visit. Sarkozy emphasised the importance given by France to its relations with the UAE, and its keenness to develop it in different areas.

He said he was content with the way the relations between the countries have grown in the past decades.

Sheikh Khalifa congratulated Sarkozy on his election victory as well as the French National Day anniversary. They exchanged views on a number of issues of common interest and current developments in the international arena.

Sheikh Khalifa expressed his satisfaction on the quality of development in bilateral ties on the scientific and cultural sectors through the establishment of a branch of Sorbonne University in Abu Dhabi, the Louvre Museum and French schools around the UAE. The leaders expressed satisfaction with the level of strategic relations between the two countries, and the cooperation in the defence sector.

They agreed on the necessity of activating cooperation agreements signed between the two countries which was signed in 1980 in the area of peaceful use of nuclear technology towards the production of electricity in the UAE.

Sheikh Khalifa praised the French initiative to ease tension between rival parties in Lebanon.

Later the President extended an invitation to Sarkozy to visit UAE which he accepted. The date of visit will be scheduled later.

An official spokesman in the Elysee Palace, said Sarkozy expressed France's readiness to assist the UAE in setting up a nuclear-based power plant and specialised committees will be set up to go. The talks were also attended by Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Presidential Affairs, Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Foreign Minister, and other members of the high-profile delegation.
