UAE appeals world to end massacres by Israel

New York: The UAE has appealed to the international community to act immediately to prevent the bloody massacre and terrorist acts committed daily by Israel against the Palestinian people. The most recent such act was the assassination of Hamas leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin.

At a United Nations Security Council meeting called in response to a request from the Arab group in the UN to discuss Israel's assassination of Sheikh Yassin, the UAE's permanent ambassador to the UN, Abdul Aziz Nasser Al Shamsi, thanked the president for convening the emergency open meeting of the council at such a critical time.

"We are in urgent need for the international community's political will to put an end to the savage and immoral practices undertaken by the Israeli government against Palestinian people for more than five decades, in an unstoppable display of arrogance and defiance of international and humanitarian laws," Al Shamsi said.

"The UAE was shocked, along with the rest of the world, at the news of the assassination of Sheikh Yassin by air strikes from an Israeli army helicopter early in Gaza City as he left a mosque after prayers." "The UAE, which feels great sadness at the assassination of Sheikh Yassin and seven of his companions, condemns strongly such a cowardly act, which has targeted the armless and disabled sheikh, and considers it heinous massacre that represents the policy of state terrorism carried out systematically by the Israeli government against the Palestinian people on a daily basis," Al Shamsi said.

"Another source of deep concern is the statement of the Israeli prime minister in which he indicated that he personally sought the extra-judicial execution of Sheikh Yassin and confirmed that such executions will continue."

The envoy said that such comments affirm that the Israeli government does not want peace and rejects all peace initiatives that aim to achieve comprehensive and just solutions in the region, end the occupation and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, with Al Quds Assharif as its capital.

"The savage assassination of Sheikh Yassin is not the first time that Israel has resorted to terrorism and committed massacres in the Occupied Palestinian land," Al Shamsi said. "The number of innocent people killed by Israel since September 2000 until March this year has touched 2,858 including women and children. This is in addition to houses demolished, property destroyed and tens of thousands of people displaced," the UN official said. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
