The Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, H.H Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has said that the world is currently going through " a historic turning point", which has cast a shadow over the global politics and economy. In a statement to the "Dir Al Watan" magazine, marking the UAE 32nd National Day, Sheikh Khalifa said the " world is at a crucial juncture where developments of event are accelerating, casting a shadow over the global politics, economic activity and social and cultural development trend."

"The blessed march, launched through the free will of President H.H Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and Their Highnesses Supreme Council Members and Rulers of the emirates, is a procession of a present with unfailing assiduity based on age-long past and looks forward to a promising future," Sheikh Khalifa said. "It is a march of concord and not discord, of strength not weakness, of development not consumption, of planning not misplanning and of decision not indecision." He pointed out that the UAE Armed Forces had been equipped with state-of-the-art weapons, outfits and training programmes.

At the political level, the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince said, the UAE approach to fast-moving events in the world was a success. "The UAE has made successful approaches to accelerating development of events through stressing the importance of respecting national sovereignty concept and non-interference in others affairs as well as extending a helping hand to peoples of the world to overcome their woes," he noted. Sheikh Khalifa reiterated his country's positive stance towards the Gulf Cooperation Council, saying the UAE has striven, and is still doing so, to realize common aspirations of the GCC people. He brought to mind his country's support to the Iraqi people "at this historic juncture."

He said recent events had driven terrorism phenomenon to the fore. "It a phenomenon alien to our religion and traditions, a matter which requires all of us to move from sheer condemnation and rejection to endeavour to contain it and deactivate its tools." He blamed "Israel's intransigence and the adverse political attitude of successive Israeli governments, including the incumbent administration" for what he described as " the political congestion" the Palestinian cause was undergoing.

On the Palestinian cause, Sheikh Khalifa said: "It is a national and humanitarian duty to sustain our position in support of the Palestinian people to enable them an independent state." He noted that his country would continue to stand by Syria and Lebanon to regain territories occupied by Israel. He called on the US, being the key sponsor of the peace process, to put pressure on Israel so that the political lull in the peace process may come to an end. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
