UAE armed forces team sets up preventive medicine unit in quake-hit

Balakot - The United Arab Emirates armed forces team, presently carrying relief operation and medical aid in the earthquake Balakot in NWFP, has established a preventive medicine unit, which has started spraying in the affected areas.



Talking to reporters at Balakot on Saturday, the commander of the UAE team Colonel Abdur Rehman Ibrahim bin Abdul Aziz said the military field hospital has expanded its activities by erecting three tentage shelter homes near the field hospital in Bisan at the outskirts of Balakot. Around 400 families are receiving medical aid are staying in these shelters. He said that the bulldozers in the field hospital are also engaged in removing the rubbles the land-slid in the blocked roads, leading to villages surrounding Balakot.



While moving towards the reconstruction stage, Col Abdur Rehman said that big tents will be provided for schools. Another step, he said, is the installation of four water purification plants to pump 40,000 gallon of drinking water per day. He said the hospital has completed its one month humanitarian services and has attended to 15000 injured and sick people. A total of 218 cases were operated and 38 serious cases were airlifted to UAE.



Further highlighting relief operation, Col Abdur Rehman Ibrahim said that 5000 tents have been distributed in Balakot and Muzffarabad and 2,680 tonnes of supplies, carried out by 45 planes through an air bridge, has been distributed in the affected areas. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
