UAE backs US moves on Mideast

The UAE strongly backs US moves expressed by US Secretary of State Colin Powel on his latest speech on the Middle East and the Palestinian cause because they are based on international legitimacy resolutions.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, urged the international community, notably Europe, Canada, Australia, Japan and the Islamic World, to throw their heavy weight behind Washington's initiative in order to find a comprehensive, just and lasting settlement to the Palestinian cause and Arab-Israeli conflict. ' Despite the statements by some officials, including Americans, about the absence of a mechanism in Powel's speech, we observe that both Palestinians and Israelis have welcomed the US initiative, which prompt us in the UAE to rally behind what the Palestinian leadership supports,' Sheikh Hamdan told the Abu Dhabi TV channel. He praised the US position on the Middle East question as practical and moderate. He hailed the UAE-US bilateral relations as special, strong and strategic.

On reasons behind holding the Afghan peace conference in Europe although the UAE has offered to host it, Sheikh Hamdan said ' The UAE welcomes and supports the conference whether it convenes on its land or in Germany. Sheikh Hamdan explained that Lakhdar Brahimi, UN special representative on Afghanistan, approached him about the possibility of hosting the meeting. ' After we examined the issue, we found that it was good to spare the blood of Muslims by allowing them to convene in the UAE. Then I informed Brahimi and the UN Secretary General who thanked the UAE for its offer to host the meeting,' he said.

On Israel's protest against a satire skit aired by Abu Dhabi TV on Israeli political leadership, Sheikh Hamdan said that he was astonished by Israel's stance, affirming that the programme (terrorisms) would continue throughout the Holy Month of Ramadan. He said that Hollywood had been attacking Arabs and Muslims for decades and had produced many films defaming the reputation of Arabs and Muslims. "Israel and international Zionism have used these films against us directly and no one heeded our repeated calls to stop them," Sheikh Hamdan said. He said the programme was simple humour, adding that it was important for Arabs to understand how they (Israel's) think and how they react to it. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
