UAE battle hard for victory

Hosts UAE revived their hopes of reaching the second round of the FIFA World Youth Championships with a hard-earned 2-1 victory over Panama in a Group A match at the Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium yesterday. The UAE collected their first three points while their opponents are yet to open their account.

The UAE started the match pressing forward for a goal and their efforts were soon rewarded when Belgian referee awarded them a penalty 15 minutes into the game following a foul by Armando Gun against Ali Al Waheebi inside the penalty box. Shihab Abdullah converted correctly from the spot.

The home defenders failed to clear a corner kick and advancing defender Armando Gun was sent clear with only Ismail Rabie, the UAE custodian to beat, which he did correctly. Later Abdullah Mallullah watched in disbelief as he saw his fierce shot, two minutes into injury time, rebound from the upright following a fast counter attacking move with Ismail Matar being the provider.

In the second half, the home players attacked more fiercely capitalising on the reduction in numbers of their rivals. But lack of concentration deprived them from an early goal as Shihab, Salih Hamad and Ridha Abdul Hadi all missed good chances. But the UAE were rewarded for their determination when Salih Hamad scored the match winner in the 34th minute, with a diving header.
