The United Arab Emirates and Algeria have been elected as members of the UNESCO's Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. The elections for the 18-member committee were held last Thursday during the general assembly of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (CSICH).

Mohammed Khalaf Al Mazrouei, Director General of Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH), said the UAE was able, through close cooperation and partnership with UNESCO, to draw up a comprehensive strategy to preserve its cultural heritage.

Addressing the convention's general assembly, Al Mazrouei called for a fair representation in the CSICH which was ratified by UAE, and to "avoid the imbalance observed in the Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage which allows little representation for developing countries." He added that the UAE will committed to safeguarding intangible cultural heritage by continuing to sponsor the Sheikh Zayed Prize for oral and intangible heritage of humanity.

Al Mazrouei announced that the UAE will publish the Arabic version of the' Intangible Heritage Messenger' magazine both in print and on the internet. The UAE, according to Al Mazrouei, has taken all steps necessary to guarantee success for its bid to register falconry as a world heritage that is being practiced in over 70 countries.
