UAE believes in peaceful resolution of differences: Al Kindi

The UAE has reiterated that it strongly believes in international peace and security as the most important factors in achieving comprehensive and just peace and that it also strongly believes in resolving differences by peaceful means. Saeed Mohammed Al Kindi, Speaker of the Federal National Council, FNC, said this in an address to the 11th conference of the Arab Parliamentary Union, APU, which opened Damascus yesterday to discuss a number of issues, including Arabs' current situation, the role of Arab parliaments in enhancing Arab solidarity and in facing squarely the current challenges.

It is also to show the APU's support for the people of Iraq in its current predicament and to voice out its total rejection of the partitioning of Iraq, to reiterate the need to protect Iraq's integrity, independence and sovereignty and to call for a central role for the UN in Iraq until the Iraqis are in full control of their country and its destiny.

Al Kindi said the UAE was deeply committed to the above mentioned principles in its foreign policy and in building relations with other countries of the world, particularly Iran, with whom, he said the UAE was committed to boosting the relations of good neighbourliness, and historic ties, through a peaceful call to Tehran to peacefully resolve the issue of the latter's occupation of the three UAE islands of Abu Musa and the Greater and Lesser Tunbs, based on the principles of UN charter and international law.

On the current developments in Iraq and its effect on regional and international situation, Al Kindi said that the APU wants to show its sympathy and solidarity with the Iraqi people in its present predicament. "The APU rejects totally anything that will lead to the partitioning of Iraq. The APU calls for the protection of Iraq's sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, as well as non- interference in Iraq's internal affairs,” he said and reiterated the need for the UN to play central role in Iraq until the Iraqis are in full control of their country and its destiny, as soon as possible.

On the situation in the Palestinian occupied territories, Al Kindi said that there was the need for the international community to exert more efforts to bring an end to Israel's continuous barbaric practices against the Palestinian people, including the thwarting of the efforts of the Quartet Committee on the roadmap to peace initiative by Tel Aviv's refusal to implement its side of the agreement and the building of the separation wall in contravention of international law.

"We hereby urge the international community to bring pressure on Israel to stop its policy of intimidation, end its threat to Syria and Lebanon because these policies are not in the interest of the international efforts to revive the Middle East peace process,” he said, adding, "Base on this, the UAE parliament wishes to reiterate here that the only way to achieve comprehensive and just peace in the Middle East is for Tel Aviv to end its occupation of all Arab lands, which Israel occupied in 1967, including the Palestinian occupied territories, Syria's Golan Heights, Lebanon's remaining land and to allow the Palestinians to establish their own independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.”

The FNC Speaker expressed the hope that the next Arab summit will come out with positive results which would match the current developments in the region and satisfy the aspirations of the Arab people. On the phenomenon of terrorism which continues to take the whole world to task since recent years, Al Kindi said that terrorism was a stark violation of all human principles and values.

"It only leads to killing innocent lives and takes to ransom the security and stability of countries. This needs the total cooperation of all members of the international community to successfully eliminate this dangerous canker,” he said. Al Kindi expressed sympathy and deep regret on the terrorist acts, which targeted the housing complexes in Riyadh and Morocco.

He expressed support for every measure taken to curb these nefarious acts and urged the international community to organise an international conference to find the best solution for terrorism and the best way to extract it. The FNC Speaker wished the two-day conference, which is being held under the auspices of Syrian President, Bashar Al Assad, great success. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
