UAE builds new silk road: UAE envoy in China

Shanghai - The UAE has built a new silk road, positioning itself as the favourite destination of Chinese exports and the second key trade partner to China in the Middle East, UAE Ambassador to China Omar Al Bitar said yesterday.

'The UAE is hosting the largest number of Chinese community and companies in the Middle East, ' Al Bitar said while addressing a ceremony marking the National Pavilion Day for the UAE at the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai.

The Day was celebrated with music and dances at the Expo Performance Centre. The UAE flag was hoisted and both the national anthems of the two countries were played.

He lauded the UAE-China bonds as excellent under the current strategic partnership. The UAE established diplomatic ties with China in 1984.

He said Expo Shanghai is one of the most important events in 2010, bringing the world together under one roof in an exemplary setting of understanding and harmony.

'In less than four decades, the UAE has turned the barren desert into green lush gardens and modern cities hosting many nationalities of countries of the world in an ideal ambience of peace, harmony and prosperity, he added.

'Featuring a huge golden dune evoking the desert landscapes of the country, the 6,000 square-meter pavilion "Power of Dreams" is reflecting the UAE environment and the film which is screening to visitors mirrors our past and present and our aspirations for the future generations,' he indicated.

The theme of the event 'Better City, Better Life', he added was easily, friendly conveyed to all visitors Li Zhiguo, ambassador at the Chinese foreign ministry, said the expo fosters friendship relations among all peoples of the world and stimulates human progress, innovation and development, cultivate international relations and offers opportunities for countries to enhance international cooperation and promote cultural exchange.

He said trade exchange between the UAE and China by sea dated back to the 7th century BC and have been growing steadily since the two countries established diplomatic ties.

The function was attended by Salem Al Ameri, Commissioner General of the UAE Pavilion, Noura Juma, UAE Consul General in Shanghai, a number of top senior officials.

On the Chinese side, a number of top foreign ministry and government officials were present. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
