UAE calls for NAM reformation

Havana - The United Arab Emirates has called for reformation of the Non Aligned Movement (NAM) so that it can grapple with global challenges.

In an address to the closing session of the 14th NAM's summit in the Cuban capital, Havana, on Saturday, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs, said: "The global political and economic developments entail us to develop and reform the Non-Aligned Movement so that it can address them and enable it to actively participate in decision-making..."

He said the reformation process should aim to reinforce the UN position by seeking to revive the role of the General Assembly and the Socio-economic Council and reform the Security Council in such a way that can achieve a fair geographical representation.

He reiterated his country's call on Iran to accept UAE's initiative to solve the issue of its three islands of Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb and Abu Musa, occupied by Tehran since 1971, through peaceful means and bilateral negotiations or refer it to the International Court of Justice.

The UAE official urged the Security Council to compel Israel to put an end to its crimes against the Palestinian people and to its occupation of the occupied territories.

"We appeal to the international community to force Israel to fully implement Security Council's resolution No. 1701, which calls for withdrawal from Lebanon's remaining southern territories and furnishing the UN with the rest of plans of landmines it planted in that area so that reconstruction of towns, destroyed during the war, may start.

"We further exhort the international community to take necessary measures, within the international law, towards declaring the Middle East and the Arabian Gulf a zone free of weapon of mass destruction, including nuclear weaponry, pressurize Israel to join the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and place its nuclear installations under the control of the International Atomic Energy Agency," Sheikh Abdullah maintained.

He underlined the need to deal with the Iranian nuclear dossier through dialogue and diplomatic negotiations and in compliance with respective international resolutions.

On Iraq, he urged the international community, particularly its neighbouring countries, to extend a helping hand to its government. He reiterated his country's denunciation of various forms of terrorism, calling for the convening of an international conference on counterterrorism. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
