New York - The United Arab Emirates has called on the international community to promote the culture of peace instead of that of violence and war.

"Historical events had shown that the dominance of the culture of violence and war has fostered the culture of hatred and revenge among many generations... This requires us now more than ever to think seriously on how to promote the culture of peace instead of the culture of violence and war which currently prevail in many volatile regions around the world," said Abdulla Jassim Abdulla Al Kashwani, member of the UAE delegation to the UN, in a statement on Tuesday before the 61st Session of the General Assembly on the item entitled: "Culture of Peace".

He said the UAE have proved the need to adopt a comprehensive and multilateral strategy by the international community in order to achieve three basic objectives, first of which is seek to find out peaceful and just solutions to outstanding issues, particularly the Palestinian question and the situation in the Middle East.

Another objective is for the international community is to disseminate the concepts of peace and have them linked to the centres of sustainable human development. The third objective of the proposed strategy, according to Al Kashwani, is for value and attitudes embraced by many countries and communities around the world to be fundamentally transformed.

"...We voice our support to all projects aiming at incorporating the principles of understanding, tolerance, respect for human rights, collaboration, gender equality, solidarity, and mutual respect among peoples and States, away from all forms of extremism and hatred, in school curricula and in the educational and awareness programs designed to consolidate and promote the best human practices and concepts," said the UAE representative.

He told the session that the UAE has pursued a distinctive educational policy, which focused mainly on enhancing the educational, cultural and social programmes and activities, with a view to strengthening the application of the principles of tolerance, brotherhood, freedom, justice, respect for the dignity of the human being and his rights, the rule of law, and mutual respect for the cultures and beliefs of other people.

"The United Arab Emirates, which has pursued a sensible and balanced national and foreign policy based upon ancestral traditions and heritage as well as the principles of the Holy Koran and Islamic culture, which call for solidarity, forgiveness, the peaceful co-existence with other peoples, non-violence and respect for pluralism, has actively expanded its diplomatic relations and cultural and economic exchange with most of the countries of the world, regardless of their political and economic orientations or religious beliefs.

"It has also supported the good offices aimed at the containment and management of conflicts and disputes among States before they occur, and the other efforts aimed at promoting reconciliation and reconstruction of post-conflict areas," he elucidated. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
